What with the rush to buy last minute presents and exchange the very first wishes, the countdown to the New Year’s Eve celebrations has now begun. Little Tibet is preparing to end 2018 with beautiful torchlight processions, music, fireworks and the ever-present mulled wine before the gala dinners. New Year’s Eve at altitude is both magical and unique, thanks to the whiteness of the snow and the swirl of colours that lights up the streets in the village centre in a truly magical atmosphere. Livigno is also getting ready to bid farewell to 2018 by repeating ancient rituals and traditions and merrily welcome 2019, full of expectation for the new year.
As every year, celebrations in Little Tibet will start at 6p.m. with the traditional torchlit parade of the ski instructors at Campo Scuola 23. The slopes will sparkle, lit up by torches held by masters and instructors who will ski down to the village, all holding hands, after a full day's work. This magical show attracts a huge number of participants every year. Open to the public, everyone, including tourists, can join the procession by buying a 5€ torch. At the foot of the slopes, a large group awaits participants, stood around a bonfire with a banner of the past year. The symbolic custom of the bonfire, set with all the torches, is one in which everyone in Livigno prepares to welcome the new year whilst sipping a restorative glass of mulled wine.
Besides being a good omen, the joyful flames of the bonfire officially give way to the New Year celebrations that will then commence in all the hotels, bars and restaurants of the village at the beginning of the evening.
The sports and wellness complex of Aquagranda Active You! will open the doors to its world of relaxation and fun at 6.30 pm, ready to welcome those who choose to celebrate the New Year in a more unconventional fashion. As of 7.30p.m. a delicious aperitif and buffet will welcome guests in readiness for dinner at 8p.m. by the poolside in the Wellness & Relax area. Participants will enjoy a gourmet menu, choosing between fish and meat with a starter, a pasta dish, main course and dessert. Quality gastronomy, live music and wellness will be key elements in an experience guests can personalise entirely. They can choose to see in the new year whilst chilling in the saunas, for example, enjoying the Aufguss rituals with AISA Aufgussmeisters and relaxing with background of Tibetan bells. These options are also available during dinner, between one course and the next. At midnight, guests will enjoy a champagne toast under the stars to celebrate in true style, then continue the evening in the wellness area. Admission is open as of 11p.m. for anyone wishing simply to celebrate at midnight.
For those of our visitors who prefer more traditional celebrations, the custom of the New Year’s Eve gala dinner starts at 7p.m. all over Livigno, both at altitude and in the village centre. Little Tibet offers countless opportunities for dining out all year round, and at New Year the mountain huts and cabins, gourmet restaurants, pubs, pizzerias and trattorias specialising in local cuisine are no exception. Indeed, they offer themed evenings and tasting menus for all needs and ages to locals and tourists alike, ranging from romantic dinners to cheerful celebrations with family or friends.
In a crescendo of anticipation and fun, the real countdown to midnight will start around 10 pm, when the New Year's parties kick off in disco pubs and famous après ski clubs both in the village and on the slopes. A range of proposals is available for seeing the new year in, with aperitifs and DJ sets, themed animations and, of course, bubbles!
The midnight fireworks display is a must, and will light up the village centre and surrounding mountains with a thousand sparkling colours. This breathtaking show will raise all eyes and glasses to the sky for a few minutes, making the exchange of new year’s wishes even more exciting. An enchanting moment before starting to party, dance until dawn or savour the magic of a nocturnal descent on a snowmobile after a toast at high altitude.
