The relationship between Livigno and the discipline is rooted in time, as certified by the participation in the Ski Classic long-distance circuit, the organisation of several Italian Cups and the traditional Sgambeda, the granfondo that will celebrate its 32nd edition on 18 December. A true paradise for cross-country skiing, whose course of excellence, with the awarding of the World Cup stage, finally reaches the World Summit.
There will be two races scheduled for the third weekend in January, with the individual sprint race in free technique on Saturday 21 to open the dances, and the Team Sprint, also in free technique, as the main course of an appointment not to be missed, which will fall in one of the most intense and decisive phases of the 2022/2023 season.
Many great athletes can be expected at the start of the two-day event in Livigno, starting with France's Richard Jouve, winner of the Specialty Cup in 2022, Federico Pellegrino, winner of the crystal ball in 2021 and 2016, and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, four-time consecutive champion between 2017 and 2020.
For the latter and the Italian in particular, competing on the snows of Livigno will have a unique flavour, given their familiarity with the resort and its facilities. Pellegrino, in fact, has been a great admirer of the Livigno slope for years, where he has often refined his preparation for the season, enjoying the benefits of altitude training. The same goes for Klæbo, the Norwegian multiple Olympic champion, who only a few days ago was the protagonist of the official opening of Livigno's cross-country skiing ring, inaugurated on 28 October thanks to the snowfarm technique.
And, together with them, on the Livigno plain, the designated location for the sprints, there will also be many other champions who can consider themselves at home in the Little Tibet, having frequented it for a long time during preparation and approach to the World Cup, further proof of the quality of the offer and the importance of altitude training. An offer that can now be defined as complete, crowned by the first World Cup cross-country skiing stage in Livigno's history.
