THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS IN LIVIGNO

Coldplay's Christmas Lights is playing in the background, and you get the impression you can also hear the unmistakable voice of Michael Bublé floating out of a bar in Via Ostaria. A group of people is standing outside, still wearing ski boots. Perhaps they’d like to go back to their hotel and change into something more comfortable, but it’s the same old story - at this time of day we get lost in tales about what we’ve been doing, enjoy a hot bombardino drink and do some duty free shopping.

The air of Livigno is cold but pleasant and there’s snow everywhere. Indeed, so much of it that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between sky and earth if it weren’t for the beautiful lights that mark out a boundary between the many different emotions you can experience in the village.

Walking through these streets is always invigorating, but the atmosphere at this time of year makes everything so much more special.

Guided by the scent of roasted chestnuts and apple fritters, you come to the renovated square of Plaza dal Comun, which awaits visitors with a show that celebrates tradition. The famous little Christmas Village houses have been set up here and the Christmas Market Association has organised everything in painstaking detail this year, too.

Lights and forest leaves are a perfect combination, creating a fairytale atmosphere that entices adults and enchants little ones. There are 12 houses, all located close to one other and each offering a range of typical products: salami, sweets, cakes, biscuits and desserts to be enjoyed on the spot with some tea, hot chocolate or spicy mulled wine. Visitors are immediately filled with a desire to give and receive Christmas presents, delighted to discover that the Christmas Village is open every day of the week this year, and not just on Saturdays and Sundays.

Walking amongst the little houses, guests will discover an artisan who creates wooden sculptures, another who works stones and paints pictures. The “Monili della Terra” (literally, jewellery from the earth) is stunning, as these handcrafted jewels are created using natural stones. Don’t miss out on warm sweatshirts, traditional slippers, blankets, pillows, duvets and a range of other products for the home - all in a typically alpine style of course.

One of the artisans explains that a range of exciting surprises has been organised on Saturdays and Sundays in December here at the village.

Father Christmas, along with his inseparable sleigh, will delight both little ones and adults wanting to enjoy a few carefree days away. Walking through the streets near the village is really pleasant and visitors can enjoy the crisp, festive air that awakens their hearts. Make the most of being able to shop all day whilst savouring a range of typical products, fully enjoying the Christmas atmosphere and the roving musicians who cheer up the afternoons with their hornpipe music. Guests will also be able to enjoy this unique sound on 22nd December, during the traditional Concert Under the Tree to be held at the Parish Church of Santa Maria. The Orobian Pipe Band will be the guest of the Corpo Musicale di Livigno (Livigno music group), directed by maestro Andrea Fioroni, and the Junior Band will also take part in the performance.

As you may already have guessed, evocative Livigno has already thought of Christmas presents, going all out this year to gift us a full month of positive energy, packed with events and excitement.
