The winter season is getting closer, and in just one month Livigno will be ready to open the first ring for cross-country skiing, which will allow amatheurs and athletes to ski at 1816 meters already on the 20th October 2016. Regardless of the weather conditions, everything will be made possible thanks to the snowfarming, i.e., storage of winter snow during the summer by the use of sawdust and a geothermal cloth that reflects the solar rays and allows the maintenance of the temperature.
Last April, we gathered and stocked a large amount of snow (5800 sqm), which was used in August to set up in the central shopping streets of the town, a track of real snow for the cross country race called "
Trofeo delle Contrade", which was also attended by the National teams of Italian cross-country skiing and biathlon with Dorothea Wierer and Federico Pellegrino, and moreover the snow will be used for the preparation of
1 km of cross-country ski track in the central plateau of Livigno. The track length is indicative, as if the weather were to allow it, will be implemented with the snow produced by the snow cannons (present on 8 out of 30km total of the Nordic skiing track) or with the natural one.
"The Snowfarming allows us to anticipate the season and to convert the snow into a touristic attraction even in summer - says Luca Moretti, CEO of Tourism Board Livigno - This winter we collected 5800 square meters of snow, of which 3100sqm endured the summer, and 1200sqm were used in August for the event Trofeo delle Contrade. So with the 2500/2700sqm that still resisted, we will set up a first ring of Nordic skiing that will open on the 20th October and will be a strong attraction for athletes, amateurs and ski equipment manufacturers. Despite the snow pile of snowfarmig has been positioned in a sunny place in the central plains of the town, where runs the track (this place was chosen in order to eliminate the fuel consumption necessary when moving the snow), it has survived more than 50% of the initial snow amount ".
From the 20th October onwards, the winter season will just increase, until arriving at the end of November with the traditional opening of the ski lifts. The theme that is the leading thread of the Livigno white season, is the sports: from alpine skiing to telemark skiing, from snowboarding to freeride, from nordic skiing to biathlon, from snowshoeing to fat biking, from mountaineering to paragliding, from ice skating to excursions on horses or by foot on groomed tracks. And in this context, the cross-country skiing is the undisputed star of the start of the season, which sees Livigno becoming the reference point for training on real snow, for many national and international federations teams.
The
3rd December 2016, will be the turn of the first big winter sports event: the
Sgambeda. At the starting line there will be thousands of cross-country skiers, for the first nordic-skiing race of the international season. The Sgambeda, that this year has also a new logo, is part of the prestigious
Visma Ski Classics circuit, that gathers the classical 13 races of all the world, among which the Vasaloppet and Marcialonga. The online registration are open till the
