LIVIGNO, CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING EVEN IN AUGUST!

Cross-country skiers dressed with vintage costumes and gears are swinging into action in the center of Livigno on August 27. Along the shopping streets there will be a cross-country skiing loop trail covered by snow. 400 participants from eight different districts are taking part in the event.

The events of Livigno never ceases to surprise: Thursday, August 27, 2015 a cross-country track with real snow is going to be prepared to host the traditional appointment with districts’ trophy along the downtown streets. It is a race reserved for cross-country skiers who belong to the eight districts of Livigno: Centro, Comunìn Pemónt, Fórcola, Ostarìa, Plàn da Sóra, Saròch, Teòla and Trepàl. The district’s members are participating dressed up with traditional costumes and equipment. The trophy, which is usually in March, this year takes place in summer to celebrate its 35th edition. Situated in the pedestrian area, Via Plàn and via Ostaria are the stage of the event where at 8.00 pm more than 400 participants will be at the start line.

The snow, that will be used for the loop, has been stored since last winter, protected by a geothermal tarpaulin, which is also used by Mottolino Fun Mountain to keep the snow stored for the Nine Knights Castle. On August 25 the tarpaulin will be opened at dawn and snow will be tilled to remove any ice blocks. A dozen of trucks bring the snow from the Campaciol area to the town center, meanwhile the streets of Via Plàn and via Ostaria will be wetted to cool down the asphalt. After that the snow  will be pressed and groomed by snowcats.

Awards ceremony is scheduled for October 30, 2015 at Plaza Placheda.
