LIVIGNO FOR RUNNERS

Alpine meadows in bloom, a temperate climate, glimpses of snow on the surrounding peaks: what better way to welcome summer and join fellow runners than to descend on Livigno to partake in a weekend of incredible events? ‘Little Tibet’ has well and truly unlocked its treasure trove of trail running mania.

Sunday 26 June: A comprehensive weekend of running on the edge of the sky with a schedule of dreams for any mountain running enthusiast. While courageous skyrunners tackle the 34 technical kilometres of the Livigno SkyMarathon, one of the Skyrunner World Series 2016 events, amateurs and mountain runners have the opportunity to experience an awe-inspiring event that’s open for all. Not just for the mythical elite, the weekend of the Alta Valtellina Skyrunning Experience features a lengthy list of running events, suitable for the whole spectrum of abilities, ranging from the technical Vertical Kilometer (Santa Caterina Valfurva, Friday 24 June), the Skymarathon (Livigno, Sunday 26 June) tracing the border between Italy and Switzerland, right through to the brand new Livigno Trail, the weekend’s most accessible running event.

While the specialities, distances and locations may vary, there’s one common denominator and that’s the unspoilt ambiance, where the satisfaction of participating takes priority over everything else.

In collaboration with the Marathon Club Livigno athletics club, Carosello 3000 and APT Livigno, the Livigno Trail has been created for those who enjoy a more classic version of running, unconcerned by results and with the desire to experience such an impressive landscape underfoot.

The ideal opportunity to enliven a Sunday of sport, the Livigno Trail follows a spectacularly beautiful route along fast and mellow trails – making it the ideal counterpart to the technical Skymarathon. Weaving around one of the region’s most beautiful valleys, the 16/17km race with 1,000 metres of elevation primarily follows gravel tracks and swooping singletracks in the unspoiled Val Federia. Race highlights include not only the superb descent from Carosello 3000 and the Costa del Sol, but also the opportunity for Livigno Trail participants to join the Skyrunner World Series route for a section, where the big names of skyrunning will be giving their all just moments later.

Further to the realisation of Mountain Park Carosello 3000, in which more than 75 km worth of trails have been mapped, way-marked and collected in a recent publication, Little Tibet aims to become the benchmark outdoor sports destination in Italy – and not just for mountain runners. “The Livigno SkyMarathon is an event that we’re passionate about and are enthusiastically supporting,” explains Camillo Bertolini, Marketing & Communication Carosello 3000 Livigno. “Livigno has the apposite mountainous territory that’s ideal for this sort of sport as well featuring all of the necessary services and facilities for even the most demanding clients. Over the past few days we’ve launched a new trail guide with 75 km of trails within the Mountain Park Carosello 3000 (downloadable from http://www.carosello3000.com/it/running-trekking/guida-running), sub-divided into 6 routes, all of which are above 2,000 metres of altitude. We’re already in the process of promoting special packages for runners and organising guided excursions on the trails. With the SkyMarathon, the new Trail event and the presence of Marco de Gasperi, the visibility of our tourism looks set to soar exponentially.”

After trialling fitness and physique at the Livigno Trail on 26 June, pencil off Saturday 23 July in your diary for the 2016 edition of Stralivigno, Little Tibet’s classic off–road half marathon. The following day is the turn of the younger generations as they partake in the Ministralivigno.
