LIVIGNO’S GETTING READY FOR THE 27th LA SGAMBEDA

The competitive cross country skiing season will kick off in Livigno on Saturday, 3rd December 2016 with La Sgambeda. Both amateurs and professional athletes will be setting off, some focussing on their performance, others simply indulging in their passion for the sport. The original 35km route has been confirmed.

On the 3rd December 2016, the 27th La Sgambeda will start in Livigno. The Piccolo Tibet gran fondo marks the beginning of the competitive season for thousands of cross-country skiing enthusiasts. One of the 13 classics in the Visma Ski Classics circuit of narrow ski competitions in the world, La Sgambeda is a reference point for a huge number of both amateurs and athletes from professional teams who are looking for ideal conditions to tackle the race calendar.
This is the first real appointment with narrow skis, and thousands of skiers meet up along the starting line spread out along the flat in Livigno. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a competitive skier or World Cup athlete, everyone is here to slide their skis, hoping they’ve chosen the right wax. The most important competition is the one each of the participants has with him or herself, which drives them to grind kilometre after kilometre of the long white ribbon which unwinds alongside the houses in the centre of town, then on into the woods.

Whilst a night snowfall is in progress, the original 35km competition route has now been confirmed, starting from the Stadio del Fondo near the centre of Livigno to Alpe Vago and Gras di Agnèi. Over 750 people have already signed up, including amateurs and the athletes of the Pro Team Ski Classics, amongst which the very strong Team Santander.
At present there are 28 Pro Teams taking part in the competition, of which 10 are Norwegian, 7 Swedish, 3 are from the Czech Republic, 2 are Italian, 1 Austrian, 2 French, 1 Finnish, 1 German and 1 Russian for a total 139 men and 36 women cross-country skiers.

Online enrolment is open until 27th November 2016 at www.lasgambeda.it, whilst the competition programme is available at http://www.lasgambeda.it/classic-programma

Since the first event held in 1990 and won by two great Italian champions, Maurilio De Zolt and Guidina Dal Sasso, over the years the La Sgambeda roll of honour has been further enriched with the victories of athletes like Maria Canins, Sabina Valbusa, Sivano Barco, Fabio Santus, Valentina Shevchenko, Antonella Confortola, Johann Muehlegg and Petter Northugg. The Minisgambeda, for kids and youngsters born between 2008 and 1999 also has a large following, and will be held on 4th December at 11a.m. at the Stadio del Fondo. There are various routes available, ranging from 1 to 5km..

An accommodation package has been put together for the cross-country skiers taking part in La Sgambeda, from 26th November to 4th December 2016, which includes accommodation in a hotel or flat, registration for the Ski Classic competition (with a 10% discount until 31st October), plus a 50% discount on 1 admission to the Fitness&Pool area in Aquagranda Active You, the Livigno sports centre.

Expo village will be open throughout La Sgambeda weekend in Plaza Placheda (which is both where the prize-giving takes place and everyone socialises) where the very latest innovations in sports equipment will be displayed and the sponsors of this Livigno event have a space. This includes Sportful (supplier of technical gadgets), the dairy Latteria di Livigno, Coop supermarket, Barilla pasta, Creval banking group, Bottega foodstuffs, Casa Vinicola Nera winery, Vis foodstuffs, Icam (which sponsors the competition by supplying products), Prinoth and Technoalpin (snowcats and equipment for planned snow-making) and Ski Trab (which will provide technical assistance along the competition route).
