Livigno Sky Marathon: iscrizioni aperte

Entires are filling fast with more than 22 nations represented and 280 participants so far.

An event that crosses national borders, the Alta Valtellina Skyrunning Experience is set to be of global importance. With less than three weeks to go until the double staging of events in the Skyrunner World Series 2016, the organisers have announced that the Santa Caterina Vertical Kilometre and the Livigno Skymarathon, held on the final weekend in June, already have more than 280 entries from 22 different nations, with 30 % coming from outside of Italy. And it’s a figure that’s growing by the day…

“We’re really satisfied,” explained the driving force behind the event Marco De Gasperi. “It’s great to see familiar top-flight names appearing on the entry list, with athletes like the American Megan Kimmel and Tadei Pivk, the 2015 Skyrunning World Series Champion as well as many others. For us, it’s amazing to receive entries from athletes from all over the world. Our objective is to introduce people to the potential of these two locations during summer, which are both world-renowned tourist hotspots for their skiing. So it looks like we’re on track to do that.”

For fans of the extreme there are two races not to be missed: “We kick off on Friday 24 June with the Santa Caterina Vertical Kilometer, a technical uphill route with a backdrop of the spectacular peaks of the Ortles and Cevedale. Starting in the centre of Valfurva, the race climbs 1,000 metres in 3 km of distance with a finish line on the Cresta Sobretta,” continues the six-times World Mountain Running Champion. “Then on Sunday in the capital of outdoor sports we’ve got the Livigno Skymarathon, a true 34.5 km cavalcade of skyrunning with 2,700 metres of altitude to combat on a route that’s fully immersed in the wild nature of the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, Northern Italy. A genuine Alpine marathon, expect technical, exposed ridges and sections run at 3,000 metres above sea level in perfect skyrunning style. We’d recommend that competitors check out our website altavaltellinaskyrunning.com to have a look at the individual race prizes and those for the two combined events."

For anyone looking for a more accessible route into sky running, the Livigno Trail held on Sunday 26 June is the ideal opportunity to enliven a Sunday of sport in the spectacular ‘Little Tibet’. “We’re running this alongside the Marathon Club Livigno athletics club, Carosello 3000 and APT Livigno as an event that has been created for those who enjoy a more classic version of running, unconcerned by results but with the same desire to experience such an impressive landscape underfoot. Weaving around one of the region’s most beautiful valleys, the 16/17km race with around 1,000 metres of elevation follows gravel tracks and swooping singletracks in the unspoiled Val Federia. Race highlights include not only the superb descent from Carosello 3000 and the Costa del Sol, but also the opportunity for Livigno Trail participants to join the Skyrunner World Series route for a section, where the big names of skyrunning will be giving their all just moments later.”
