LIVIGNO, CROSS-COUNTRY SEASON OPENS 15TH OCTOBER AND SKI SLOPES ON 1ST DECEMBER. NEWS ABOUT MUNT LA SCHERA TUNNEL FARES.

Skiing begins again in two weekstime on the cross-country ski trail, whilst on 1st December the winter season officially begins with the opening of the slopes. Everything is ready to welcome skiers and athletes looking to train at altitude.

The winter season is approaching and Livigno has already started warming up in readiness. The cross-country ski slope, created using 50,000 cubic metres of snow that was stored during the summer using the snowfarm technique (www.snowfarm.it) opens on 15th October.

100,000 cubic metres of snow were stored last winter, of which 20% melted during the summer, 30,000 were used for the Trofeo delle Contrade (a Nordic skiing event held on real snow during the summer) and the remaining 50,000 will be used to open the cross-country skiing trail.

Opening so much earlier than other resorts, Livigno becomes the ideal training destination for a huge number of international cross-country skiing and biathlon teams and athletes, who will descend from the glaciers in order to train at 1816 metres, which is perfect for High Altitude Training.

Lovers of downhill skiing and snowboarding only have to wait until the 1st December, when the winter season will officially be inaugurated with the opening of the ski slopes and when the Skipass Free offer starts (guests booking in a partner hotel for a minimum 4 nights or in a flat for a minimum 7 nights receive a free ski pass). With a 6 day ski pass, guests also get a free 1 hour?/day? access to Aquagranda Slide&Fun, where they can have fun and regenerate in the water after a day’s skiing (for information and regulations: https://www.livigno.eu/offerte-vacanza/skipass-free).

On 2nd December, there will be the 28th Sgambeda, the Livigno marathon which is part of the international Visma Ski Classics circuit. Over 1000 international athletes and amateurs are expected to turn up at the starting lines.

Moreover, there is a new feature regarding Tunnel Munt La Schera fares for those guests arriving from Northern Europe. The new feature for this season is that it is now possible to buy a cheaper ticket online (valid only for Saturdays until 4pm). Indeed, tickets will cost €32 instead of €45 (official 2017/18 fares are attached).

Livigno has embarked upon an innovative route as regards scheduled snowfall, taking part in PROSNOW, a wide-ranging European project which also involves eight alpine resorts. Optimisation of programmed snow production marks a significant challenge for ski resorts. Today, the volumes of water necessary are estimated at the beginning of the season based on data which are often inaccurate e.g. the worst year ever recorded, with a period of observation limited to one or two decades, and the decision whether to produce or not is generally made the same day depending on the weather.

The lack of information in advance may have negative consequences both in economic (early melting of the snow produced, overproduction, inadequate beating frequency, ...) and ecological terms, not to mention the quality of the snow on the ski slopes and skiers’ satisfaction. mancava uno spazio nell’italiano The PROSNOW project, coordinated by Météo-France, involves 12 European partners and focusses on developing a service which provides decision-making support for ski resorts based on weather forecasts monitored over several days and seasonal forecasts over several months.

This new tool will provide information about weather which is directly accessible to those working within the skiing sector e.g. altitude/snow storage, together with specific information concerning the uncertainly of the forecasts. Eight pilot stations in the French, Italian, Swiss and German alps will contribute to setting up the service and testing the “demonstrator”.

The project will last 3 years and was presented in response to the European Commission’s “Fit for work in a greener economy” Horizon 2020 call for tenders, associated with societal challenge 5 "Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials", with research aims based on the climatic services market. Besides last generation weather forecasts, the project will also focus on the new seasonal weather forecasting services developed in Europe within the sphere of the Copernicus Climate Change Services (C3S) programme.
