ICON LIVIGNO XTREME TRIATHLON 2019 THE SHOW

Giulio Molinari and Katrine Woie are the best athletes

This morning at 4:30 am, on the beach of Lake Gallo of Livigno, you can see that a perfect day lies ahead. The starry sky foretells a sunny and clear day at this altitude for ICON Livigno Extreme.Over 220 athletes have signed up for one of the most popular Extremes of 2019 and the 15.2 degrees of the lake make for a swim which is certainly not simple but by no means prohibitive. The whistle signals the start of the race with 3.8km of swimming in complete darkness. This ICON has been the first edition to be part of the prestgious Xtri World Tour; as such eight valuable slots for the world championships for Norseman 2020 have been made available

Among the men, the first athlete to reach T1, representing Livigno Team, is Giulio Molinari. His CV is one of a professional athlete. To just name a few of his accomplishments: in 2014 he became European Champion in Majorca in middle distance triathlon, as in 2016. He placed 8th in Ironman South Africa and was first among the Italians in 2018 in the World Championships, placing 20th. He has no competition in the water and is able to create a gap of 7'28" with the second competitor, the Helvetic Patrik Weber. The bike leg reveals no great surprises. Molinari shows his superior athletic abilities and during the 195 km on the bike the gap between him and Steve Mazzucco, the Swiss athlete who is placed second, increases steadily. Molinari arrives in T2 with an advantage of 20 km over Simone Lunghi, who has been able to overtake Mazzucco on the Stelvio. The third man to enter T2 is Mazzucco and it seems that these three will fill the podium. The run is everything but easy and asks a lot of the athletes. Molinari continues his solitary run towards Carosello 3000 where victory awaits him. The finish line is his after 12 hours and 36 minutes and 35 seconds. He is followed by Simone Lunghi with a gap of 10 km and over an hour. Third at the finish line is Pallo Rait, who has been able to recover his gap during the run.

Among the women the first athlete to finish the swim is the Greek Violeta Dialetara, followed by the American Carlee Tulett with only a gap of 15". Dialetara manages the swim well and arrives in T1 seeming hardly tired. She keeps a steady lead during the first part of the bike.  Some signs of fatigue begin to emerge around half way through the race. The Norwegian Kathrine Woie, having recovered a gap of over 15' in the swim, performs outstandingly on the bike; when Dialetara starts to slow down, she surpasses her at the 120 km mark. Carlee Tulett is third at the half way mark of the bike leg. The Stelvio once more shuffles the cards during the bike leg of the women's race. Dialetara has less and less energy left and is joined by Laura Ravello. Together they head for T2. Kathrine Woie is the first to arrive in T2, ahead of the American Tulett by 45'. Laura Ravelli slows down during the last km of the bike and looses sight of the American. In T2 Ravelli is about 35' behind with the Greek Dialetara dangerously close. Kathrine Woie executes the climb towards Carosello perfectly, reaping the benefits of race managed with prudence and an excellent distribution of effort. In 17 hours and 30 minutes and a few seconds, she crosses the finish line at Carosello 3000 and fulfills her dream. She is the queen of this ICON 2019. She is followed by Carlee Tulett, second women to arrive. They are the only two women who are able to get to the finish line at 3000 meters. The other women have had to stop in Livigno, as outlined by the race regulations.
