The resort is already working to welcome athletes and amateurs from all over the world. The construction of the cross country ring, initially involves the preparation of the Marianna Longa technical ring, a route of about 5 km with a difference in altitude, perfect for training.
Afterwards, and depending on snowfall, it will be possible to reach the 30 km of winter slope that from the central plain of Livigno to the area of Alpe Vago, to guarantee a complete training far from the distractions of the town centre.
For an even more complete experience at the Cross-Country Stadium it is also possible to have access to the free changing rooms or book a lesson with the instructors of the Cross-Country Ski School.
The cross-country ring will be open every day from 6.30 am to 12 noon to all athletes of national teams andand national teams, and from 12.00 to 18.30 to amateurs, subject to payment of a ticket.
Livigno is appreciated by the teams not only for the altitude, but also for the quality of the snow, that already at the end of October, is very similar to the winter snow on which they will compete. Among the teams that have chosen Livigno in autumn are the national teams of Russia and Norway (the strongest national cross-country team in the world, which has chosen Livigno as aLivigno as destination for all trainings in high altitude), Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain, Germany (which chooses Livigno also for the biathlon), but also the Japanese national cross-country team.
Every year, Livigno hosts numerous races and competitions open to both professionals and amateurs that attract athletes from all over Europe and beyond. The Sgambeda competition, is the 35 km long free technique race that start and finish in Livigno, which in its 31st edition will take place on 4 December 2021.
Thanks to the Snowfarm, the innovative method of snow conservation in perfect harmony with the environment, Livigno can start work on the cross-country slope. The early opening of the winter season is scheduled for 23 October.
The Snowfarm technique involves first of all collecting, between March and April, both natural snow and artificial snow; during this period the snow is stored in the central plain.
Here a real snow mountain is built, covered first with sawdust,to insulate the summer air temperature, and then with a geothermal sheet to reflect the sun's rays.These two tools prevent and counteract the melting process, as they act on environmental factors such as wind and temperature, which cause 80% of the transformation into water. Once the covering is complete, the snow remains to rest for the summer months. On average, around 80,000 cubic metres of snow are stored on average each year, with an estimated loss of only 20%.
