LIVIGNO: THE GAMES START NOW ATHLETICS TRACK, FULFILLMENT OF A DREAM

Press conference to present the new athletics track of Livigno today. Ribbon-cutting ceremony with the authorities. Livigno Team’s athletes and FIDAL’s heptathlon athletes attended the event. 800 metres won by Nicolò Cusini (1st), Rudy Zini (2nd), both representing the Livigno Team, third Martinez

The new athletics track of Livigno was presented today during a press conference at the Aquagranda Active You Centre. The president of the tourist information office, Luca Moretti, pointed out that this is not a point of arrival but a starting point towards the 2026 Olympics: Our Olympic Games start from events like these – he said. – The track was opened on 29th July and many athletes have already tested it. From next year, we will have a fixed timing system on 100 meters, while the laps of the track will be calculated with a wristband system. We have also signed a multi-year agreement with FIDAL to bring athletes here to train, and thanks to this project Livigno will be present at the 'Italian athletic centre' during the World Championships in Doha (September 27th-October 6th)"

The designer and works supervisor Giuseppe De Martino stated: "For me sport is a great passion and a job, and I’m very proud to see that this track has finally been built. We wanted to create a facility for all athletes, for their preparation in view of big events, also in terms of shock absorption during training. An earth wall was built to protect the athletes from the wind”.

The conference was held by Pierangelo Molinaro, historic journalist of ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’: "I've been deep in sport for many years, and seeing that a town like Livigno has managed to build such a structure has opened my heart. This is an important result for all the Italian sport; no place at this altitude has ever had such facilities”. The authorities of Livigno too were very satisfied with this goal; the mayor of Livigno Damiano Bormolini stated: "For Livigno the athletics track is a goal that we set many years ago, when we began to invest in sports tourism. We started from the swimming pool, and now we built the athletics track; we will continue to invest in this sense, we are halfway through in view of the 2026 Olympics". The vice-mayor Remo Galli said: We have fulfilled a dream, and I thank the person who put it in my head, Professor Clemente Silvestri during my first Cooper tests. This summer we were overwhelmed by requests and we will have to face many challenges in the next few years. We will invest a lot more on Aquagranda in order to have a reference point for training in the mountains. Silvestri was one of the most satisfied: "Seeing my students in the Livigno Team is a unique satisfaction, the greatest that a teacher can have: passing my knowledge to the younger generations and seeing these results is unbelievable. I see sport for everyone, such a structure must be as lively as possible, let us bring schools and all the kids here”.

Tiziano Castellani of the Livigno Marathon Club wanted to recall the past: "I think about the 80s when there were few people running, everyone wanted to ski, but many athletes were already coming to Livigno to train and asked for the athletics track". FIDAL Councillor Oscar Campari has clear ideas: "The objective of the federation is to bring all the athletes here on retreat. Today we have an important group of heptathlon athletes and the hammer thrower Marco Lingua".

Daniela Spandri, representing the Istituto Comprensivo of Livigno, has promised to take the scholars to the athletics track starting from Monday. Remarks of appreciation came from the athletes of the Livigno Team, including Michela Moioli who will be in the front line at the 2026 Olympics: "Here I am at home, I can always train at the top and I have everything I need. Together with Livigno we are building a nice course in view of the next Olympics, you will surely see me here". Giulio Molinari, winner of Icon extreme triathlon 2019, agrees with Moioli: I train for six months a year in Livigno, I can't find anywhere a sports centre such as Aquagranda and Livigno in general. After Icon I feel like a real inhabitant of Livigno".

The topic of the dream is recurring: "I have many dreams, I will take part in my Olympics in 2026 on the tracks that I see every day from my windows at home," said Maurizio Bormolini. Giacomo Bormolini, Nicolò Cusini, Rudy Biancotti, Roberto Nani, Michele Bormolini, Elisa Nakab, Rudy Zini and Diego Caverzasi completed the group of athletes.

After the conference, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in the presence of the mayor of Livigno, Damiano Bormolini, the vice-mayor Remo Galli, Luca Moretti, president of the tourist information office of Livigno and the parish priest Don Giuseppe Longhini. Then some athletes tested the new athletics track, including the heptathlon athlete Sveva Gerevini, heptathlon Italian champion in 2018 and 2019, Sofia Montagna, heptathlon Italian champion under 23 in 2019 who boasts 4 Italian titles, Federica Palumbo, silver medal at the Italian Championships 2019 and Italian teammate at the Europe Cup 2019, Enrica Cipolloni, ten times Italian champion, Dario Dester, Italian champion under 20 in decathlon both indoor and outdoor, the hammer thrower Marco Lingua; all those present tried 60 meters, long jump, vortex and 800 meters; in this last race the victory went to the two athletes of the Livigno Team, Nicolò Cusini (1st place 2.07) and Rudy Zini (2nd place 2.09), Marc Martinez finished third (2.12).
