LIVIGNO SKYMARATHON: PROMOTED TO FULL MARKS THE TEST EVENT 2015

Great international athletes have run on the mountains around Livigno. A spectacular sunny day accompanied the top runners who tested the trail of the Livigno SkyMarathon, an event that is in the running to host a stage of the Skyrunner World series 2016. Thanks to the support of Apt Livigno and the organization of the team Valtellina Wine Trail has been established sound basis for what might become a steady event for this international discipline.

At the starting line international athletes among whom the Nepalese Mira Rai, the British Tom Owens, Emmie Collinge andPhil Gale, the Finnish Olympian Mittunen, the Swiss Micha Steiner, the world skyrunning champion Elisa Desco, the winner of the Tor des Geants Franco Colle, the champion of ResegUp Nicola Golinelli and Emanuele Manzi and Marco De Gasperi.

After the start in the heart of Livigno and the walkway along the pedestrian area the athletes reached the lake to start the climb that brought to the Mot Mountain: a natural terrace with stunning view over the village. After crossing the Canton Pass it began the most technical and panoramic stretch before the wild Salient Valley. After climbing the valley for about 500 meters difference in altitude they had to cross the Trupchum Pass to reach the Cassana Pass through a passage along a ridge equipped with ropes which have been fixed by the Alpine guides including the trail’s director Adriano Greco. The athletes reached the highest point at 3047 meters at the Chaschauna peak. After that, an easy descent brought the runners to the last climb to reach the  Piz da Rjn at an altitude of 3007 meters. The hardest part has been done, indeed the runners pass through the beautiful Federia Valley to reach the final walkway in the town centre and to be welcomed as "heroes" at the finish line in front of the City hall.

This test event allowed the organizers to understand the possible realization of a race that might be unique, thanks to the spectacular passes, the altitude and the territory's features .

Great satisfaction for the professional Marco De Gasperi: "We could not choose a better day for this test event. I thank all participants who have provided us with important feedback. It is very important to understand which are the elements that have to be consider in the future. I received compliments from everyone for the track's features and I want to thank Apt Livigno, for the support they gave us, and the trail’s director Adriano Greco for the safety of the trail. It has been established sound basis for a high-level event considering that a discipline such as the skyrunning is able to enhance the high mountain tracks”.
