LIVIGNO ANNOUNCES THE OPENING OF THE 2020-2021 WINTER SEASON

On October 30th, 2020, the opening of the cross-country ring of Little Tibet marks the beginning of one of the longest ski seasons in Italy. With 115km of slopes and an equally large area where you can practice freeride, alternative activities for the whole family and the most charming après-skis in the Italian Alps, the fun on the snow will continue until the beginning of May.

Livigno is ready to welcome snow lovers and announces the opening of the 2020-2021 winter season: the opening of the cross-country ring will officially start on 30th October 2020. With a season going from the end of October to May, once again Little Tibet is confirmed as one of the Italian destinations with the longest winter season.

The opening date of the Mottolino, Carosello 3000 and Sitas Ski Area lifts has also been set, scheduled for 28th November 2020. The snow already fell on the highest peaks, and in recent days the snowmaking systems have been switched on, for the preparation of the slopes on both sides of Livigno: maybe Little Tibet could surprise skiers, snowboarders and snow lovers with an early opening  in the coming weeks

The starting date on 30th October, which far anticipates that of other Italian ski resorts, is made possible thanks to the innovative spirit that has always distinguished Livigno: Since 2016, the ring of cross country ski is made using the snowfarm technique: an innovative snow storage method using sawdust and geothermal sheets to protect snow from the high summer temperatures and prevent it from melting down. Since 2016, Livigno has enthusiastically adopted snowfarming, which reduces the use of artificial snow by storing part of the abundant end-of-winter snowfall. Besides that, in these days also the snow guns have been switched on for even extra snow.

Whether they prefer to go down to the valley on skis or snowboard, in Livigno all snow lovers can find the perfect holiday to meet their needs: renewed lifts, all kinds of outdoor and indoor activities , information on snow and avalanches always updated thanks to the Livigno Outdoor Center for those who love freeride and dedicated offers.

To make the stay of winter sports lovers unique, Livigno renews the Skipass Free promotion again this year: from 28th November to 18th December 2020 and from 10th April to 2nd May 2021, booking a stay of at least 4 or 7 nights respectively in the Hotels and in the apartments affiliated  to the offer,  the guests will receive a free ski pass to access all the Livigno lifts, valid for the entire duration of their holiday.

With a ski area of 115 km, an altitude that goes from 1816 meters in the center up to 2900 meters above sea level, 74 slopes of all lengths and difficulties and served by 6 cable cars, 14 chairlifts and 11 ski lifts, Livigno is in fact the queen of winter sports at high altitude in the Italian Alps: this is where the italian freestyle movement has grown and, every year, the destination is chosen by hundreds of internationally renowned athletes for their training. It is one of the strengths that will allow Livigno to host the snowboard and freestyle disciplines at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics.

The snowparks of Little Tibet, which have always been a point of reference for all European enthusiasts, made the Olympic dream possible: thanks to the maximum expertise of the park shapers, every year in Livigno freestylers and snowboarders can choose from numerous snowparks and mini snowparks, including Mottolino Snowpark, The Beach - Snowpark Carosello 3000, the Amerikan Snowpark and the Snowpark20, but also the many Fun Areas, where fun is guaranteed both on skis and on the snowboard.

For freeride lovers, however, Little Tibet offers 100 square km of backcountry,  immense wild areas of soft, powder snow just waiting to be furrowed by skis and snowboards. As one of the resorts to believe strongly in this speciality, Livigno has strengthened and set up special services through its Freeride Project, which is unique in Italy and has teams from all over the world competing against each other. The base of the project consists of drawing up and issuing the Avalanche Bulletin, a daily service which provides detailed information about the stability of the snow cover in each area of Livigno and allow to all freeriders to be updated every morning through the website, but also thanks to the billboards and videos displayed at the ski lift stations and through the free "My Livigno" app.

Besides the Avalanche Bulletin, visitors can also consult the daily Snow Quality Bulletin. This bulletin displays information about the snow conditions, quality of the skiing and the snow, and exposure of stones in the three different skiing areas, i.e. alpine areas, the woods, the area under the woods.  These are marked in different colours corresponding to various parameters, crossing data that take into consideration the skiable area of Livigno from 3000m a.s.l. down to the village.

However, winter sports doesn't only mean skiing, snowboarding and freeriding: during the winter season, Livigno also offers many opportunities for outdoor activities to challenge yourself and your limits. For bike lovers there is the Fat bike, while for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the landscape while walking there is Nordic Walking and snowshoes. There are also opportunities and facilities for horse riding, sledding, skating and ice climbing, while for adrenaline lovers, paragliding is a must.
