Livigno traditions

Little Tibet celebrates its traditions with three events: the Livigno Costume Festival, the Harvest Festival and the Alpen Fest.

Livigno, in the heart of the Alps, has always wanted to celebrate its traditions: from the typical Valtellina dishes presentin the bars and restaurants in and around the pedestrian area, to the bilingual photographic book 'Leina da Saor' - createdby the Association of Chefs and Pastry Chefs and published by Mondadori, which contains 100 traditional recipes, 37 revisited and over 250 photographs - to the MUS! Museum of Livigno and Trepalle, which tells the history of the area. But that's not all... The people of Livigno dedicate three events during the summer to their typical customs and traditions, giving international tourists to take a trip back in time.

On 29 July, the 24th edition of the famous Livigno Costume Festival took place: an itinerant appointment with the tradition, history and culture of Livigno. Locals and visitors had the chance to discover the origins of Little Tibet, its stories, ancient knowledge and traditional flavours thanks to the folkloristic group that organises the event every year.
A parade of old-time motor vehicles and characteristic Livigno costumes kicked off the evening, which was followed by some representations of everyday life from the past and present. Following this, in Plaza dala Gesa, all participants and spectators were able to enjoy a dinner of typical Valtellina dishes, made with local and km0 products.

Also on 21 August, Livigno will take a step back in time: the folkloristic group will organise the Festa dal Fen, a special occasion for locals and international tourists who will be able to observe traditional haymaking techniques at close quarters, while also discovering anecdotes and stories about cutting hay and local life.
The folk group will also perform traditional Livigno dances, a free performance that everyone can attend. For those who wish, however, it will be possible to try typical local specialities at lunchtime.

On 17 and 18 September, the Alpen Fest will be held, a two-day festival celebrating the farming origins of Little Tibet. On this occasion, the protagonists of the festival will be the farmers of Livigno and Trepalle, and the animals: the return of the cattle to the valley, after having spent the summer in the alpine pastures and meadows, will be celebrated.
On Saturday, 17 September, the streets of Livigno will welcome the typical parade of farmers and their animals, adorned with cowbells and floral garlands, who will walk together through the pedestrianised centre, honouring the origins and passion that shepherds have for animals and for this work.
The following day, however, the parade will animate the streets of the hamlet of Trepalle, the highest parish seat in Europe and the highest village in Italy.
